There are a few words in the Bible that, if I’m honest, I usually skip over. Meekness is one of those words. It’s not that I’m not interested in what the bible says, I just never really internalized the concept of meekness to the point that it should bear any relevance to my life. Then, a few days ago, the Holy Spirit spoke to me about developing meekness. At the time, I didn’t even really know what it was. Most people, I think, can’t really give an accurate definition of what it means to be meek, so I thought I might try to help.
Easton’s 1897 Bible Dictionary:
meekness: a calm temper of mind, not easily provoked (James 3:13). Peculiar promises are made to the meek (Matt. 5:5; Isa. 66:2). The cultivation of this spirit is enjoined (Col. 3:12; 1 Tim. 6:11; Zeph. 2:3), and is exemplified in Christ (Matt. 11:29), Abraham (Gen. 13; 16:5, 6) Moses (Num. 12:3), David (Zech. 12:8; 2 Sam. 16:10, 12), and Paul (1 Cor. 9:19).
Dictionary.com:
1. humbly patient or docile, as under provocation from others. 2. overly submissive or compliant; spiritless; tame.
When I ponder these definitions, I envision something of great power lying dormant intentionally. It’s as if a child were poking a lion with a stick. Surely the lion could devour the child, but chooses not to. It’s not being weak, it’s being benevolent.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)
Did you ever consider why the meek would inherit the earth? Could it be that the inheritance of such great authority and power over the whole earth can only be given to those who can control themselves? What would happen if such great power were given to somebody of quick temper who is easily angered?
Wellington Boone calls it “worm training.” The idea is that a serpent, when stepped upon, will strike back. A worm, on the other hand, will be crushed. The concept is brokenness. The idea is that God will never entrust somebody with great power when that person is likely to strike back at his enemies and misuse the authority that he has been given.
Is there any retaliation left in you? Can you really turn the other cheek? God is shining His light on this part of my heart, and I thought I just might share it with you.
