There is a desire in all of us to fulfill the God-ordained purposes for our lives. Most of the time we are not even aware of it, and even separated from the knowledge of God we will oftentimes unknowingly pursue a path that serves as a means to work out that innate passion.
“…follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
Probably a more direct way to word that statement would simply be, “Follow me and I will make you ________.”
Is the blank still empty as pertains to you? In reality, the blank can only be filled in through the process of following the one who created you and placed you on the earth at a specific time in a specific place.
Here they were trying their best to catch fish (because eternity was already in their hearts) but still short of their ultimate calling. It took an encounter with Jesus and a response by them to put down their way and take up His.
As we follow Him, He is fashioning us into who we need to be so that we can accomplish those holy purposes that He designed us for long before we even arrived!
“At once they left their nets and became His disciples.” (v.20)
